What Happens

Each hair cycles through growing, resting and shedding. A big stress pushes a large share of hairs into resting at once. About three months later they shed together. Triggers include surgery, high fever, COVID, rapid weight loss, childbirth, a new medication, and severe emotional stress.

How to Recognize It

Diffuse thinning all over rather than a pattern. Lots of hairs with a small white bulb on the end. Often a clear trigger three months earlier. The hairline stays where it was.

What to Do

Fix the trigger if it is ongoing (iron, thyroid, a crash diet). Then wait; regrowth starts within three to six months. Oral minoxidil speeds it along if you want help. If shedding lasts beyond six months, labs and a provider visit.

When It Is Something Else

If the shedding is paired with a receding hairline or widening part, the stress unmasked pattern hair loss that was already starting. That needs treatment to stop.

Common Questions

Will the hair grow back fully?+

With pure stress shedding, yes, usually in six to twelve months.

Does minoxidil help?+

It speeds recovery. Oral minoxidil is $149 a month.

Can anxiety alone cause it?+

Severe, sustained anxiety can. Day-to-day stress does not.
