BMI Calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick number from your height and weight that tells you which weight range you fall in. It is the first number a provider looks at before a weight-loss program.

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is healthy, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or more is obesity. It was built for whole populations, not one person, so it does not know how much of your weight is muscle.

What BMI is used for

Most weight-loss programs, including ours, start at a BMI of 30, or 27 with a weight-related condition like high blood pressure, high cholesterol or sleep apnea. That is the line insurers and the FDA use for medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Where BMI falls short

A muscular person can read as overweight. An older adult can read as healthy while carrying too little muscle. Waist size, blood pressure and lab results matter as much. If your BMI surprises you, the next step is a lab panel drawn at your home and a video visit with a provider.
