Where Oral Rehydration Fails
Oral rehydration is first-line and usually sufficient. It fails when vomiting outpaces intake — then the line is not a luxury but the only route open.
5-HT3 Blockade
Ondansetron blocks serotonin receptors in the gut and the chemoreceptor trigger zone, which is why it works on food-poisoning nausea specifically.
Screening Is the Safety Step
Fever, bloody stool, severe pain or symptoms past forty-eight hours change the diagnosis. We screen before treating, every time.
Before, During and After
Before
Eat something and drink water in the two hours beforehand — a hydrated vein is an easy vein. Have your medication and supplement list ready; leave nothing off it.
During
Your nurse checks vitals and places a small catheter, usually in the forearm. You will feel cool fluid for a minute. Sit back, work, read or sleep — the nurse stays with you throughout.
After
Keep the dressing on for an hour. Mild bruising at the site is normal for a day or two. Drink normally; there is no need to force fluids afterwards.
What the Science Actually Supports
This is supportive care, not treatment of the underlying cause. Bloody stool, high fever, severe abdominal pain or symptoms past forty-eight hours need emergency assessment — we screen for all of it at intake and will send you on rather than treat you.
