Magnesium and Cortical Spreading Depression
Low magnesium lowers the threshold for the cortical wave believed to start migraine with aura. IV dosing raises serum levels immediately, which oral cannot do mid-attack.
NSAIDs at the Trigeminal Level
Ketorolac blocks prostaglandin synthesis around the trigeminovascular system — the pathway migraine pain actually runs on.
Why Intravenous Matters Here
Gastric emptying stalls during an attack, so oral medication sits undissolved. The line sidesteps a gut that has stopped working.
Before, During and After
Before
Eat something and drink water in the two hours beforehand — a hydrated vein is an easy vein. Have your medication and supplement list ready; leave nothing off it.
During
Your nurse checks vitals and places a small catheter, usually in the forearm. You will feel cool fluid for a minute. Sit back, work, read or sleep — the nurse stays with you throughout.
After
Keep the dressing on for an hour. Mild bruising at the site is normal for a day or two. Drink normally; there is no need to force fluids afterwards.
What the Science Actually Supports
Intravenous magnesium has reasonable evidence in acute migraine, particularly with aura, and ketorolac is well established for abortive relief. This is not a substitute for neurology care — if your pattern is changing or worsening, we will say so and refer.

Does it hurt?+
A single small catheter placement — a few seconds of sting, then nothing. Our nurses place hundreds of lines a month, and we use the smallest gauge your veins will take.
How soon will I feel it?+

Can I add to my drip?+
