1. Pattern Hair Loss (Genes + DHT)

This is the big one. A hormone made from testosterone, called DHT, slowly shrinks hair follicles in people who inherited sensitive follicles. In men it shows as a receding hairline and a thinning crown. In women it shows as a widening part. It starts anywhere from the late teens on and gets worse without treatment. It is also the kind that responds best to medication.

2. Stress Shedding

A big shock to the body (surgery, a fever, a crash diet, a hard breakup, childbirth) can push a lot of hairs into their resting phase at once. Two to three months later they fall out together. Doctors call it telogen effluvium. It looks scary in the shower drain, but it almost always grows back on its own within six months.

3. Nutrition

Low iron, low vitamin D, too little protein, or a very low-calorie diet can thin hair. This is one reason we draw labs at home before we treat hair loss. Fixing a low ferritin level sometimes does more than any pill.

4. Thyroid and Hormones

An underactive or overactive thyroid thins hair all over the head. So can PCOS in women and a sudden stop in hormone therapy. A simple blood test rules these in or out.

5. Medications

Some blood thinners, blood pressure drugs, acne retinoids, antidepressants and chemotherapy cause shedding. Never stop a medication on your own; ask the provider who prescribed it.

6. Tight Hairstyles

Braids, tight ponytails, weaves and extensions pull on the follicle for hours a day. Over years this becomes traction alopecia, which is permanent if it goes on too long. Loosening styles early is the fix.

7. Autoimmune Hair Loss

Alopecia areata causes smooth round bald patches. It is the immune system attacking follicles, not DHT, and it needs a dermatologist rather than finasteride.

How We Figure Out Which One You Have

A free video consultation, a look at your photos, and labs drawn at your home (iron, vitamin D, thyroid, hormones). For pattern hair loss we prescribe finasteride, oral minoxidil or the topical spray. Finasteride, oral minoxidil, the topical spray and the women's program are each $149 a month. The full program (finasteride, minoxidil and ketoconazole shampoo) is $249. Shampoo alone is $19. Two months is 10% off and three months is 15% off.

Common Questions

Can hair loss be reversed?+

Pattern hair loss can be stopped and partly reversed with treatment started early. Stress shedding reverses on its own. Scarring and long-standing traction loss usually do not.

Is losing 100 hairs a day normal?+

Yes. Shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal turnover. Clumps, a visibly wider part or a receding hairline are the signs to act on.

Do I need a dermatologist?+

For patches, scalp pain, scaling or sudden loss, yes. For typical thinning at the hairline or crown, our telehealth program handles it.
