Treatments

Oral minoxidil is the best-studied medication for women and works regardless of the cause. Spironolactone blocks the effect of male hormones on follicles and helps when hormones are part of the picture. We combine them in the women's program, $149 a month. Finasteride is not used in women who could become pregnant.

Postpartum shedding peaks around month three and recovers by a year; no treatment needed unless it does not. Perimenopause and menopause thin hair as estrogen drops; minoxidil and sometimes hormone therapy help. PCOS thins hair through androgens; spironolactone is the usual answer.

If it started two to three months after a shock and is all over, probably. It recovers on its own.
