Three different kinds of skin changes
Wegovy is a weekly weight-loss shot made by Novo Nordisk. Its active ingredient is semaglutide. When people say Wegovy made their skin sensitive, they usually mean one of three things. Each has a different cause and a different fix.
The first is a reaction right where the needle went in. The second is a rash or itching anywhere on the body. The third is not caused by the drug directly. It is what happens to skin when you lose a lot of weight quickly, such as dryness, sagging, or a dull look.
Injection-site reactions
A small red bump, mild itching, or a bruise at the injection site is common with any shot. In Wegovy clinical trials, a few people out of every hundred reported this. It usually fades in a day or two.
You can lower the chance by letting the pen warm to room temperature for about 15 minutes before injecting, cleaning the skin with alcohol and letting it dry fully, and rotating spots. Use the belly, thigh, or upper arm, and do not inject in the same place two weeks in a row.
If the area gets hot, swollen, very painful, or starts to spread, that could be an infection or a stronger reaction. Call your care team.
Rashes, hives, and itching
Semaglutide can, rarely, cause a true allergic reaction. The FDA label lists hives (raised itchy welts), swelling of the face or throat, and trouble breathing as signs to stop the medicine and get help right away. These are rare but serious.
More often, a mild rash or itching has a simpler cause. Dehydration dries out skin. Eating much less means less healthy fat and fewer vitamins reaching your skin. Both are easy to fix once you spot them.
If you get a new rash that lasts more than a few days, take a photo and show your prescriber. It helps them tell the difference between a drug reaction and plain dry skin.
Skin changes from fast weight loss
When you lose weight quickly, the fat under the skin shrinks faster than the skin itself can tighten. This can leave skin looking loose, thin, or crepey, especially on the face, neck, arms, and belly. Some people call this effect 'Ozempic face,' since Ozempic is the diabetes version of the same drug.
This is not a drug side effect. It is a weight-loss effect. It happens with surgery and strict diets too. Losing weight more slowly, keeping protein intake up, lifting weights, and staying hydrated all help the skin keep up.
Daily skin care that helps
Drink enough water. On a GLP-1 medicine you may not feel thirsty, so set reminders. Dry skin is almost always linked to not drinking enough.
Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer twice a day. Look for ceramides, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid on the label. Avoid hot showers and harsh scrubs.
Eat enough protein, about 0.7 to 1 gram per pound of your goal body weight each day. Protein is the building block of collagen, which keeps skin firm. Add healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, and fish.
Use sunscreen every day. Thinner skin burns faster, and sun damage makes loose skin look worse.

Common Questions
Is a red bump at the injection site normal?+
Yes, a small red or itchy spot that fades within a day or two is common. Spreading redness, heat, or pus is not normal and should be checked.
Can Wegovy cause hives?+
Rarely. Hives, face or throat swelling, or trouble breathing can be signs of a serious allergic reaction. Stop the drug and get medical help right away.
Why does my skin look dull and dry?+
Most often it is dehydration and eating too little healthy fat and protein. Drinking more water and adjusting your diet usually fixes it within a few weeks.
Does Wegovy cause saggy skin?+
The drug itself does not. Rapid weight loss does. Losing weight at a steady pace, strength training, and protein help the skin keep up.
Can I use tretinoin while on a GLP-1 medicine?+
Yes, there is no known interaction. Tretinoin can help with texture and firmness. Zen IV Spa offers it for $99.
Is compounded semaglutide FDA-approved?+
No. Compounded semaglutide contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy but is made by a compounding pharmacy and is not an FDA-approved product.
