What Wegovy is
Wegovy is a brand-name medicine made by Novo Nordisk, a drug company from Denmark. The active ingredient is semaglutide. It is given as a shot under the skin once a week with a small pen.
Semaglutide copies a gut hormone called GLP-1. Your body makes this hormone after you eat. It tells your brain you are full, slows down how fast your stomach empties, and helps control blood sugar. Wegovy gives you a steady, higher dose of that signal all week long.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Wegovy in 2021 for adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight and have a weight-related health problem. It was later approved for teens 12 and up as well.
Benefit 1: Real, measurable weight loss
The biggest reason people ask about Wegovy is weight. The key study was called STEP 1, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2021. It was a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, which is the strongest kind of study design.
Adults who took Wegovy for 68 weeks lost about 15 percent of their body weight on average. People who got a placebo shot and the same lifestyle advice lost about 2.4 percent. For someone who weighs 220 pounds, 15 percent is about 33 pounds.
Not everyone loses the same amount. Some people lose more, some less, and a small number do not respond much at all. Results depend on the dose you reach, how long you stay on it, and the food and movement habits you build at the same time.
Benefit 2: Protection for the heart
In 2024 the FDA added a second approved use. Wegovy can now be used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death from heart disease in adults who already have heart disease and are overweight or have obesity.
That approval came from the SELECT trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2023. More than 17,000 people took part. Those on Wegovy had about a 20 percent lower chance of a major heart event compared to placebo over roughly three years.
This was a big deal. It was the first time a weight-loss medicine was shown to protect the heart in a large trial, not just help people lose pounds.
Benefit 3: Better blood sugar, blood pressure, and more
Because semaglutide started life as a diabetes drug (sold under the name Ozempic), it also helps the body handle sugar. In the STEP trials, people with prediabetes often moved back into the normal range.
Studies also saw small drops in blood pressure, waist size, and blood fats like triglycerides. Many people report fewer cravings and less 'food noise,' meaning constant thoughts about eating.
In 2025 the FDA also approved Wegovy for a liver condition called MASH (fat and scarring in the liver) in adults who do not yet have cirrhosis. This shows the benefits reach beyond the number on the scale.
The trade-offs you should know
Wegovy is not a free ride. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach pain. These are usually worst when the dose goes up and tend to calm down over weeks. Starting low and climbing slowly helps.
The label carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors. This was seen in rodent studies, and it is not known if it happens in people. Wegovy is not used in anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or a rare condition called MEN 2.
Less common but serious problems include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and kidney injury from dehydration. If you stop the medicine, much of the weight often comes back over time, so Wegovy is meant to be part of a long-term plan, not a short fix.
How Zen IV Spa fits in
Zen IV Spa does not sell brand-name Wegovy. We prescribe compounded semaglutide, which is the same active ingredient prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy. Compounded medicines are not reviewed or approved by the FDA, and that is an important difference to understand before you choose.
Our compounded semaglutide program is $199 per month. You start with a free video visit with our medical team. If you qualify, a nurse comes to your home in New York or New Jersey to draw labs, and your medicine is shipped to you.
Is Wegovy right for you?
Wegovy makes the most sense for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a condition like high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or type 2 diabetes. It is not for people who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or have the thyroid history mentioned above.
The honest picture is this: semaglutide is one of the best-studied weight-loss medicines ever made, and the average results are strong. But it works best when paired with protein-rich meals, regular movement, and a prescriber who watches your progress. Common Questions
How much weight can I expect to lose on Wegovy?+
In the STEP 1 trial, the average loss was about 15 percent of body weight over 68 weeks. Your own result may be higher or lower.
Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?+
Both contain semaglutide. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes and tops out at a lower dose. Wegovy is approved for weight loss and heart protection at a higher 2.4 mg weekly dose.
Is compounded semaglutide FDA approved?+
No. Compounded medicines are made by licensed pharmacies for individual patients, but they are not reviewed or approved by the FDA.
Will the weight come back if I stop?+
Often, yes. A follow-up study called STEP 1 extension found people regained about two-thirds of the lost weight within a year of stopping. Long-term habits matter.
How fast does Wegovy work?+
Most people notice less appetite in the first few weeks. Meaningful weight loss builds over months as the dose increases.
