Why storage matters for semaglutide
Semaglutide is the drug inside Wegovy and Ozempic, both made by the company Novo Nordisk. It is a peptide, which means it is a small chain of amino acids, like a tiny piece of protein. Peptides are fragile. Heat, freezing and sunlight can unfold them. Once that happens the drug may stop working, and you cannot tell by looking at it.
Compounded semaglutide, which Zen IV Spa prescribes, is the same molecule made by a licensed compounding pharmacy. It is not FDA-approved. It usually comes in a small vial instead of a pen, and it needs the same care.
The basic rule: keep it in the refrigerator
Unopened Wegovy pens and Ozempic pens should be stored in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit, or 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Keep them in the original box to protect them from light. Do not put them in the freezer, and never use a pen that has been frozen, even if it has thawed.
Compounded semaglutide vials follow the same fridge rule. Your pharmacy label will show a beyond-use date. That is the last day the vial should be used, and it is often shorter than the date on a brand pen because compounded products are not tested for long-term shelf life the same way.
How long it can stay out of the fridge
The brand labels allow some room temperature time. Wegovy pens can sit between 46 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit for up to 28 days. Ozempic pens, once you start using one, can be kept at room temperature up to 86 degrees or in the fridge for up to 56 days. After that they should be thrown away even if medication is left.
For compounded semaglutide there is no single rule, because each pharmacy sets its own guidance. Many say the vial can be out for a short time while you draw a dose, but should go back in the fridge right away. If your vial has been left out overnight, call the pharmacy or our team before using it. Do not guess.
Storage mistakes that ruin the drug
The back wall of the refrigerator is the most common problem. It can get cold enough to freeze a pen. Store it on a middle shelf or in the door. Keep it away from the freezer vent.
Hot cars are the second problem. A parked car in summer can pass 120 degrees in minutes. Never leave your medication in a car, a mailbox or a sunny windowsill. If a delivery sat on a hot porch for hours, contact the pharmacy before using it.
Light exposure is the quieter risk. Keep pens and vials in the box or a dark pouch. Also watch the liquid. It should be clear and colorless. If it looks cloudy, has particles or has changed color, do not use it.
Traveling with semaglutide
Carry your medication in your hand luggage, not checked bags, because cargo holds can get very hot or very cold. Use an insulated pouch with a cold pack, but put a cloth between the pack and the pen so it does not freeze. TSA allows injectable medication and needles. Keep the pharmacy label with it.
For trips under four weeks, a Wegovy pen can stay at room temperature within the label limits, so you do not need to panic about every hour outside the fridge. For longer trips, plan for a refrigerator at your destination. Hotel mini fridges work but can run cold, so check the setting.
Needles, sharps and leftover medication
Use a fresh needle for every injection. Put used needles in a hard sharps container or a thick plastic bottle with a lid. Many pharmacies and some county programs in New York and New Jersey accept full containers. Do not throw loose needles in the trash.
Zen IV Spa ships compounded semaglutide to your home for $199 a month after a free video visit and at-home labs drawn by a nurse. Every shipment comes in cold packaging with storage instructions on the label. If you ever have a question about whether a dose is safe to use, message us before injecting. Common Questions
Does semaglutide have to be refrigerated?+
Yes, as the main rule. Brand pens allow limited time at room temperature, up to 28 days for Wegovy. Compounded vials should stay in the fridge except while drawing a dose.
What if my semaglutide froze?+
Throw it away. Freezing can damage the peptide, and it will not recover when thawed. Contact the pharmacy for a replacement.
Can I inject semaglutide cold from the fridge?+
Yes, but a cold injection can sting. Let the pen or vial sit at room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes first.
How do I know if my semaglutide went bad?+
Cloudy liquid, particles, color change or a long stretch out of the fridge are the signs. If you are unsure, ask the pharmacy before using it.
Can I fly with semaglutide?+
Yes. Keep it in your carry-on in an insulated pouch with the pharmacy label. Needles are allowed with the medication.
