How common is nausea on semaglutide?
Semaglutide is the drug in Wegovy and Ozempic, both made by Novo Nordisk. Nausea is its number one side effect. In the STEP 1 trial of Wegovy, about 44% of people reported nausea at some point, compared with about 17% on placebo.
The good news is that most of it was mild or moderate. Only a small share of people quit the trial because of stomach problems. For most, nausea came and went, mostly in the first few months.
Compounded semaglutide, which is not FDA-approved, contains the same active drug, so the same side effects apply.
Why semaglutide makes you queasy
Semaglutide slows how fast your stomach empties. Food sits there longer. That is part of why you feel full, but it also means a big or greasy meal can leave you feeling sick for hours.
The drug also acts on parts of the brain that control appetite and nausea. That is why some people feel queasy even on an empty stomach.
Nausea is worst right after a dose increase. Each time you step up, your body needs a week or two to adjust. That is why Wegovy raises the dose only every four weeks.
Nine ways to ease nausea
1. Eat smaller meals. Half portions, more often, are easier on a slow stomach. 2. Stop at the first sign of fullness. Pushing past it is the most common cause of a bad night. 3. Go easy on fat and fried food. Fat empties slowest of all.
4. Sip water all day instead of gulping. Dehydration makes nausea worse. 5. Try bland foods when queasy: toast, rice, crackers, bananas, broth. 6. Ginger tea or ginger chews help some people, and small studies support ginger for mild nausea.
7. Stay upright for an hour after eating. 8. Pick your shot day so the peak falls on a quiet day. Many people feel it most 24 to 72 hours after injecting. 9. Ask about a nausea medicine. Prescribers often give ondansetron for the first weeks of each dose step.
Should you slow down the dose?
Yes, if nausea is getting in the way of life. Staying an extra two to four weeks at a step is common and does not hurt your long-term results.
Some people do best staying at 1 mg or 1.7 mg instead of pushing to 2.4 mg. The FDA lists 1.7 mg as an approved maintenance dose for Wegovy.
Never try to push through severe nausea by skipping meals. Eating too little leads to dehydration, dizziness, and muscle loss.
When nausea is a warning sign
Call your prescriber or get care right away if you have severe belly pain that spreads to your back, with or without vomiting. That can be pancreatitis, a rare but serious side effect.
Also get help if you cannot keep fluids down for more than a day, if you feel faint, or if you are peeing very little. Dehydration from vomiting can hurt the kidneys.
Pain in the upper right belly, especially after fatty meals, can be a gallbladder problem. Gallstones are more common during fast weight loss.

Common Questions
How long does semaglutide nausea last?+
For most people it is worst in the first one to two weeks after each dose increase, then fades. It usually gets much better after a few months.
Does nausea mean the drug is working?+
Not really. Nausea is a side effect, not a sign of success. Many people lose weight with little or no nausea.
What foods make semaglutide nausea worse?+
Fried foods, fatty meals, large portions, alcohol, and very sugary drinks are the usual triggers.
Can I take an anti-nausea medicine with semaglutide?+
Often yes. Ondansetron is commonly prescribed for the first weeks of a new dose. Ask your prescriber.
Should I skip a dose if I feel sick?+
Do not change your schedule on your own. Call your prescriber. They may hold or lower the dose.
When is nausea an emergency?+
Severe belly pain, vomiting that will not stop, signs of dehydration, or feeling faint all need prompt medical care.
