What Cialis is and how it works

Cialis is a brand-name pill made by Eli Lilly, an American drug company. Its active ingredient is tadalafil. The FDA approved it in 2003 for erectile dysfunction (ED). Generic tadalafil has been available since 2018 and works the same way. Zen IV Spa prescribes generic tadalafil.

Tadalafil belongs to a group of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. When you are aroused, nerves in the penis release a chemical that relaxes blood vessels and lets blood flow in. An enzyme called PDE5 shuts that signal off. Tadalafil blocks the enzyme, so the signal lasts longer and erections are firmer and easier to keep.

One important point: the pill does not create arousal. It only helps your body respond to it. Without sexual stimulation, nothing happens.

Pick the right dosing style

Tadalafil comes two ways. As-needed dosing is 10 mg or 20 mg taken before sex. It starts working in about 30 to 60 minutes and lasts up to 36 hours, which is why it earned the nickname the weekend pill.

Daily dosing is 2.5 mg or 5 mg taken every day at the same time. After about five days, the drug reaches a steady level in your blood, and you can be ready any time without planning. In clinical trials, daily 5 mg improved erectile function scores about as much as the as-needed dose.

Daily dosing is often the better choice for men who have sex more than twice a week, who find planning kills the mood, or who also have urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate, which daily tadalafil is also approved to treat.

Timing and food

Take the as-needed dose at least 30 to 60 minutes before sex. Peak blood levels happen around two hours after a dose, so taking it earlier in the evening often works better than taking it right before.

Unlike sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil is not slowed down by food. A heavy meal will not block it. That said, a large, fatty meal can make anyone sluggish, so lighter eating still helps performance.

Alcohol is the real enemy. One or two drinks is usually fine, but more than that lowers blood flow, dulls nerves, and can drop blood pressure when combined with tadalafil. If it is not working, cut the alcohol before you blame the pill.

Give it a fair trial

The FDA label and urology guidelines both note that many men need several attempts before the medicine works well. Nerves, pressure, and a new routine all get in the way the first time. Try at least four to six times, on different days, before deciding it is not for you.

Stimulation matters more than many men expect. Foreplay, a relaxed setting, and time all help. The drug amplifies arousal; it does not replace it.

If 10 mg does not do the job, your prescriber may move you to 20 mg. Doses above 20 mg are not approved and do not add benefit; they only add side effects.

Fix what is working against you

ED has causes, and tadalafil treats the symptom. Smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and low testosterone all damage the blood vessels and nerves the pill depends on. Treating them makes the pill work better and sometimes reduces the need for it.

Exercise is a proven helper. A 2023 meta-analysis of randomized trials found that aerobic exercise improved erectile function scores in men with ED, and the gains were biggest in men with the worst ED. Sleep, stress, and relationship issues matter too.

Certain medicines blunt erections, including some blood pressure pills, antidepressants, and finasteride in a small share of men. Tell your prescriber everything you take. Never combine tadalafil with nitrates, like nitroglycerin, or with the recreational drug poppers; the blood pressure drop can be dangerous.

Side effects and how to manage them

Common side effects include headache, flushing, stuffy nose, indigestion, back pain, and muscle aches. Back and muscle aches are more typical of tadalafil than other PDE5 drugs and usually show up 12 to 24 hours after a dose. Hydration and a lower dose help.

Rare but serious issues include sudden vision or hearing loss and an erection lasting more than four hours, called priapism. Both need immediate medical care.

Common Questions

How long before sex should I take Cialis?+

Take an as-needed dose 30 to 60 minutes before, though peak levels are around two hours. Daily low-dose tadalafil works any time once steady levels are reached.

Does food affect Cialis?+

No, food does not meaningfully change how tadalafil is absorbed. Heavy alcohol use, however, can reduce its effect.

Is daily Cialis better than as-needed?+

Neither is better for everyone. Daily 5 mg suits men who have sex often or dislike planning; as-needed suits men who have sex less often.

Can I take more than 20 mg?+

No. 20 mg is the highest approved dose. Higher doses add side effects without added benefit.

Why isn't Cialis working for me?+

Common reasons are too little stimulation, alcohol, nerves, not enough tries, or an untreated cause like low testosterone or diabetes. Talk to your prescriber.

Does Zen IV Spa prescribe brand Cialis?+

We prescribe generic tadalafil, which has the same active ingredient and works the same way, as part of our $129 ED program.
