What It Does

It controls the yeast that drives dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, which inflame the scalp. A calmer scalp grows hair better. A few small studies suggest a mild anti-DHT effect at the follicle, which is why it is part of many hair programs.

How to Use It

Two or three times a week. Lather, leave it on the scalp for three to five minutes, rinse. Use a normal shampoo on the other days. Results on flaking show in a couple of weeks; any hair benefit takes months.

Realistic Expectations

It is not a regrowth treatment on its own. Think of it as the third leg of a stool: finasteride stops the loss, minoxidil grows hair, ketoconazole keeps the scalp healthy.

Getting It

Prescription-strength ketoconazole shampoo is $19 a month, or included in the full hair program ($249).
