There is no single right number

Men get erections throughout the day and night. Some happen because of sexual thoughts. Many happen for no obvious reason at all. A healthy adult man may have anywhere from a few to a dozen in 24 hours. The count drops a little with age, but it does not drop to zero.

What matters more than the count is the pattern. Regular erections, including during sleep, are a sign that the nerves, blood vessels, and hormones are working. A sudden change is worth paying attention to.

Nighttime erections

Nearly all healthy men have erections while they sleep. Doctors call this nocturnal penile tumescence. Sleep studies show three to five episodes a night, each lasting around 25 to 35 minutes. They line up with REM sleep, the stage when you dream.

These erections are not caused by dreams about sex. They seem to be the body's way of keeping the tissue healthy. Each episode brings fresh, oxygen-rich blood into the penis. Without that, the tissue could stiffen over time.

The famous morning erection is just the last of these cycles. You wake up during or right after a REM period and notice it. It is a good sign.

Daytime erections

During the day, erections come from two sources. One is mental arousal, such as seeing or thinking about something sexual. The other is physical touch, including friction from clothing. Teenagers and young men get many random ones because testosterone is high and the nerves are very responsive.

As men move into their 30s and 40s, random daytime erections usually become less frequent. That is normal. It does not mean anything is wrong as long as erections still come when you want them.

What a drop in erections can mean

If morning erections fade for weeks at a time, it can point to a physical cause. Low testosterone is one possibility. Poor blood flow is another. Diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, and some medications, including antidepressants and blood pressure pills, can all reduce erections.

Stress and anxiety can stop erections during sex but usually do not stop nighttime erections. That difference is useful. If you still wake up hard but struggle with a partner, the cause is more likely in the mind than in the plumbing.

Erection problems can also be an early warning for heart disease. The arteries in the penis are smaller than the ones around the heart, so they show trouble first. A man with new erectile dysfunction in his 40s or 50s should ask a doctor about heart risk.

Too many erections

Frequent erections are rarely a medical problem. The one real exception is priapism, an erection that lasts more than four hours without sexual stimulation. This is an emergency. It can damage the tissue permanently. It is rare and most often linked to certain medications or sickle cell disease.

How Zen IV Spa can help

If erections have become unreliable, Zen IV Spa offers a free video visit with the medical director. The ED program is $129 and uses generic sildenafil or tadalafil, the same active ingredients as Viagra and Cialis. A nurse can also come to your home in New York and New Jersey to draw blood and check testosterone and other markers.

If you finish early rather than struggle to get hard, there is a separate premature ejaculation program for $79.

Common Questions

Is it normal to not get morning erections every day?+

Yes. You may not notice one every morning because you wake up outside a REM cycle. A pattern of no morning erections for several weeks is worth checking.

Do nighttime erections stop with age?+

They become shorter and less frequent, but healthy older men still have them. Losing them entirely usually has a cause.

Can medication reduce how often I get erections?+

Yes. Some antidepressants, blood pressure drugs, antihistamines, and prostate medications can lower frequency or firmness. Ask your prescriber before stopping anything.

How long should a normal erection last?+

During sex, anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour is typical. One lasting more than four hours without stimulation needs emergency care.

Does getting erections mean I do not have low testosterone?+

Not always. Men with mildly low testosterone can still get erections. A morning blood test is the only way to know your level.
