What a Transplant Does
Follicles from the back of the head, which are DHT-resistant, are moved to the front or crown. The moved hair is permanent. The native hair around it keeps thinning unless you treat it, which is why untreated patients end up with an island of transplanted hair and a bald ring.
What Medication Does
Finasteride stops the loss and minoxidil thickens what is left. For many men in their 20s and 30s this alone is enough. For men with large bare areas, it protects the investment of a transplant.
Cost
A transplant in the New York area runs $8,000 to $20,000 and is often repeated. Medication is $149 to $249 a month. Most surgeons will tell you to be on finasteride for at least six months before surgery.
The Order
Start medication. Take photos. Reassess at twelve months. If bare areas remain that medication cannot fill, that is when a transplant makes sense, and you keep the medication afterward.
