What Is Happening
Minoxidil in particular resets the hair cycle. Hairs that were at the end of their life get released early. The follicles then start a fresh, longer growing phase. The result looks like loss for four to eight weeks and then reverses.
How Long
Shedding peaks around week four to six and settles by week eight to twelve. Regrowth is visible by month three to four.
What to Do
Keep taking it. Take photos so you can see the recovery. Message your provider if the shed lasts past three months or comes with scalp pain or patches.
When to Worry
Patchy loss, a sore or scaly scalp, or shedding that keeps going past month three. Those get a provider review and possibly labs.
Common Questions
Does everyone get the shed?+
No. Maybe a third of people notice it.
Does finasteride alone cause it?+
Less often than minoxidil, but it can.
Should I lower the dose?+
Not for the shed. Ride it out.
