The Numbers
In the original trials, lowered libido, erection difficulty and reduced semen volume were reported by a small minority of men on finasteride, and by a smaller minority on placebo. The gap was a couple of percentage points. Most men who had a side effect saw it fade within weeks, and many saw it fade even while staying on the pill.
Other Reported Effects
Breast tenderness or mild swelling (rare), mood changes (rare and debated), and a temporary shed in the first two months as weak hairs make room for stronger ones. That early shed is a sign it is working.
Post-Finasteride Syndrome
Some men report sexual or mood symptoms that persist after stopping. It is rare, the science is unsettled, and we do not pretend it does not exist. If anything feels off, you message your provider and we stop or switch. Topical finasteride and oral minoxidil are the usual alternatives.
Who Should Not Take It
Women who are pregnant or could become pregnant should not take or even handle crushed tablets. Men trying to conceive sometimes pause it. People with liver disease need a conversation first.
How We Handle It
Honest consent at the consultation, a check-in at four weeks, and an easy switch to another program if you want out. Finasteride, oral minoxidil, the topical spray and the women's program are each $149 a month. The full program (finasteride, minoxidil and ketoconazole shampoo) is $249. Shampoo alone is $19. Two months is 10% off and three months is 15% off. Every prescription at Zen IV Spa is written by a licensed provider under our medical director after a free video consultation. Medication ships to your door anywhere in New York or New Jersey, and a nurse can come to your home for labs or a first dose.
Common Questions
Do side effects go away if I keep taking it?+
Often, yes. If not, stopping resolves them in most men within weeks.
Does finasteride affect PSA tests?+
It lowers PSA by about half. Tell any doctor who orders a PSA that you take it so they can adjust.
Is 1 mg the right dose?+
1 mg daily is the standard hair dose. Lower doses work for some men with fewer side effects; your provider can adjust.
