What CBD is

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is one of many compounds found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, the part of cannabis that gets people high, CBD does not cause a high. It is sold as oils, gummies, capsules, lotions, and even lubricants.

Only one CBD product is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is a prescription medicine called Epidiolex, used for rare forms of childhood epilepsy. Every other CBD product you see in stores is a supplement or a cosmetic, which means nobody has checked whether it works or even whether it contains the amount of CBD on the label.

The claim: CBD helps you last longer

Premature ejaculation (PE) means finishing sooner than you or your partner would like, often within a minute or two of starting, and feeling unable to control it. It is the most common sexual complaint in men under 40. Because anxiety makes PE worse, and CBD is marketed as calming, sellers connect the dots and say CBD helps you last longer.

That is a theory, not a finding. We searched the medical literature and found no clinical trial that tested CBD for premature ejaculation. No study has given men CBD, timed their performance, and compared it with a placebo. Any claim that CBD is proven to help with PE is not backed by research.

What the limited research does say

There are a few small studies on CBD and anxiety. One 2011 Brazilian trial found that a single large dose of CBD reduced anxiety during public speaking in people with social anxiety disorder. Doses in those studies were 300 to 600 milligrams, far higher than the 10 to 25 milligrams in a typical gummy. Whether a small dose does anything for anxiety is unknown.

Surveys of cannabis users sometimes report better sexual satisfaction, but those surveys are about whole cannabis with THC, not CBD alone, and they measure enjoyment, not timing. Some people also report that cannabis makes them finish faster, not slower. The picture is mixed, and none of it applies cleanly to CBD by itself.

In short, if CBD helps you last longer, it is most likely by making you feel a little calmer, and even that effect is not well proven at store-bought doses.

Risks and things to know

CBD is generally well tolerated, but it is not harmless. It can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, diarrhea, and changes in appetite. It is processed by the liver and can raise blood levels of other medicines, including some blood thinners and seizure drugs. High doses have caused liver test changes in studies.

Product quality is a bigger problem. The FDA has sent warning letters to many companies for selling CBD with false health claims, and independent lab tests have found products with far less CBD than labeled, or with THC they did not disclose. If you try CBD, buy from a company that posts third-party lab results.

What actually works for premature ejaculation

Several treatments have real evidence. Behavioral methods like the stop-start and squeeze techniques teach you to recognize the point of no return and back off. They are free and work for many men with practice.

Numbing sprays and creams with lidocaine or benzocaine reduce sensitivity. Randomized trials show they lengthen time to ejaculation several-fold. Daily or on-demand SSRIs, a class of antidepressants that includes sertraline and paroxetine, delay ejaculation as a side effect. Doctors prescribe them off-label for PE, and in trials they extend time to ejaculation by several minutes on average. For men who also have trouble keeping an erection, sildenafil or tadalafil can help with both.

These are the tools a medical provider would actually reach for. CBD is not on the list.

Common Questions

Is there any study showing CBD helps with premature ejaculation?+

No. As of now there are no clinical trials of CBD for PE.

Can CBD lubricant help me last longer?+

There is no evidence for it. Lubricants with lidocaine or benzocaine, on the other hand, have trial data for delaying ejaculation.

Is CBD safe to take with Viagra or Cialis?+

There is no known serious interaction, but CBD can affect how the liver processes some drugs. Tell your provider if you use it.

Does CBD affect testosterone?+

Human data is very limited. Some animal studies suggest high doses may lower testosterone, but this has not been shown in men at typical doses.

What is the fastest proven fix for PE?+

A lidocaine-based spray applied 10 to 15 minutes before sex works the same day. SSRIs take a week or two to build up.
