Yes, Wegovy can cause dizziness

Wegovy is a weekly semaglutide shot made by Novo Nordisk for weight management. Its FDA label lists dizziness as a side effect. In the clinical trials, about 8% of people on Wegovy reported dizziness, compared with about 4% on placebo.

That means dizziness is real but not common. Most people never feel it. When they do, it is usually mild and tied to something that can be fixed.

The same applies to compounded semaglutide, which contains the same drug but is not FDA-approved.

Cause 1: Not drinking enough

This is the most common reason. Semaglutide cuts thirst along with hunger for many people. Add nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea during a dose increase, and you can get dehydrated fast.

Dehydration lowers your blood volume. When you stand up, less blood reaches your brain for a moment, and you feel lightheaded.

Fix: aim for eight or more cups of fluid a day, more if you are sweating or sick. Add an electrolyte drink if you have had vomiting or diarrhea.

Cause 2: Eating too little

When your appetite drops, it is easy to go most of the day without eating. Low fuel can leave you weak, foggy, and dizzy, even if your blood sugar is in the normal range.

Fix: eat small amounts on a schedule, even when you are not hungry. A protein shake, Greek yogurt, eggs, or a handful of nuts counts. Do not skip breakfast on shot days.

Very low-calorie eating for weeks can also drain electrolytes like sodium and potassium, which adds to the woozy feeling. A simple blood test can check this.

Cause 3: Low blood sugar

Semaglutide by itself rarely causes low blood sugar in people without diabetes. But if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea pill for diabetes, the risk goes up a lot. The Wegovy label warns about this.

Signs of low blood sugar include shakiness, sweating, fast heartbeat, confusion, and dizziness. If you have diabetes, check your sugar when you feel this way.

Fix: tell your prescriber about every diabetes medicine you take. They may lower those doses when you start Wegovy.

Cause 4: Lower blood pressure

Losing weight lowers blood pressure, which is good. But if you take blood pressure pills, your pressure can drop too low as the weight comes off. In the STEP trials, systolic blood pressure fell by several points on average.

The sign is dizziness when you stand up quickly, sometimes with blurred vision for a second.

Fix: stand up slowly. Ask your prescriber to recheck your blood pressure and adjust your pills as you lose weight.

When dizziness needs a doctor

Get medical care right away if dizziness comes with chest pain, fainting, trouble speaking, weakness on one side, a very fast or pounding heartbeat, or severe belly pain. Those are not typical Wegovy side effects and need to be checked.

Also call your prescriber if dizziness lasts more than a few days, keeps you from driving or working, or comes with vomiting that will not stop.

For mild dizziness, start with fluids, food, and slower movements. If that does not help within a few days, your prescriber may pause the dose increase.
