What hemorrhoids are
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in and around the anus. Everyone has these veins. They become 'hemorrhoids' when they swell, itch, bleed, or hurt. Straining on the toilet, constipation, sitting for long periods, heavy lifting, and pregnancy are common causes.
About half of adults have had hemorrhoid symptoms by age 50. They are annoying but almost never dangerous. Most clear up with fiber, water, and over-the-counter creams.
Erectile dysfunction, or ED, means trouble getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. It also becomes more common with age.
Do hemorrhoids directly cause ED?
No. Hemorrhoids are a vein problem on the surface of the anal area. Erections depend on arteries that carry blood into the penis, on nerves that signal the arteries to open, and on hormones. Hemorrhoids do not block those arteries or damage those nerves.
There are no studies showing that hemorrhoids cause ED. If you have both, they are most likely two separate issues that happen to share a neighborhood.
That said, pain, bleeding, and embarrassment from hemorrhoids can absolutely lower your desire for sex and make it harder to relax. That can look like ED even when the plumbing is fine.
Shared causes that link the two
Hemorrhoids and ED share some risk factors. Sitting all day, being overweight, low fiber intake, and not exercising raise the risk of both. Chronic constipation and straining can also stress the pelvic floor muscles, which play a role in erections.
Certain conditions, like diabetes, can cause both constipation and ED through nerve and blood vessel damage. Heavy drinking is another shared cause. In other words, the same lifestyle that leads to hemorrhoids can also hurt your erections.
Fixing the shared causes often helps both. More fiber, more water, daily walks, and less sitting improve bowel habits and blood flow at the same time.
Pain and the brain
Erections start in the brain. Stress, worry, and pain all send 'not now' signals. If sitting hurts, if you are afraid of bleeding, or if you feel self-conscious, arousal drops. This is called psychogenic ED and it is very common.
Some men avoid sex entirely during a hemorrhoid flare. That is reasonable. But if the avoidance lasts after the flare heals, it can turn into performance anxiety. Breaking that cycle sometimes takes a short course of ED medicine to rebuild confidence.
Treating the hemorrhoids and talking honestly with your partner usually goes a long way.
Hemorrhoid treatments and erections
Hemorrhoid creams and suppositories do not affect erections. Office procedures like rubber band ligation also do not. Surgery for severe hemorrhoids is done near, but not on, the nerves involved in erection, and ED after hemorrhoid surgery is rare.
Some men worry about anal sex and hemorrhoids. Anal sex can irritate existing hemorrhoids and should wait until a flare heals. It does not cause ED.
If you had a sudden change in erections right after any pelvic surgery, tell your surgeon. That is unusual and worth a check.
When to get help
See a doctor for rectal bleeding that is heavy, lasts more than a week, or comes with weight loss or changes in bowel habits. Those can be signs of something other than hemorrhoids.
For ED that lasts more than a few months, a medical visit can find the cause. Zen IV Spa offers a free video visit for men in New York and New Jersey. If labs are needed, a licensed nurse comes to your home. Our ED program is $129 and includes generic sildenafil or tadalafil, the active ingredients in Viagra and Cialis. Common Questions
Can hemorrhoids cause erectile dysfunction?+
Not directly. Hemorrhoids are surface veins near the anus. Erections depend on penile arteries, nerves, and hormones, which hemorrhoids do not affect.
Why do I have both hemorrhoids and ED?+
They share causes like sitting all day, extra weight, low fiber, diabetes, and heavy drinking. Fixing those helps both.
Can hemorrhoid pain affect my sex drive?+
Yes. Pain and embarrassment lower desire and can cause stress-related ED. Treating the hemorrhoids usually helps.
Does hemorrhoid surgery cause ED?+
Rarely. The surgery is near but not on the erection nerves. Tell your surgeon if erections change afterward.
Can I take ED medicine while I have hemorrhoids?+
Yes. Sildenafil and tadalafil do not affect hemorrhoids. Your prescriber will check your other medicines and heart health first.
