How to Read It
Dermatologists use the Norwood scale. Stage 1 is a youthful straight hairline. Stage 2 is slight recession at the temples, which most men get after 25 and which is often just a mature hairline. Stage 3 is a clear M shape. From stage 3 on, the crown usually starts to thin too. Treatment works best at stages 2 and 3.
Mature Hairline or Hair Loss?
A mature hairline moves back about a finger's width, evenly, then stops. A receding hairline keeps going, deepens at the temples, and the hairs at the edge get thin and fine. If you are not sure, a photo every three months tells the truth.
What Works
Finasteride is the medication for the hairline, because the hairline is the most DHT-sensitive area. Minoxidil adds thickness but does less at the temples alone. The full program ($249) combines them. Hair transplants move hair from the back to the front but do nothing to stop the loss behind the new hairline, which is why surgeons want you on finasteride first.
What Does Not
Shampoos that promise regrowth, biotin in people who are not deficient, scalp massagers, and caffeine serums. They are not harmful; they just do not move the hairline.

Common Questions
Can a receding hairline grow back?+
Partly, if treatment starts while the follicles are still alive. A hairline that has been bare and shiny for years usually needs a transplant.
At what age does it start?+
Anywhere from 18 on. By 35, about two thirds of men have some recession.
Does a hat make it worse?+
No. That is a myth.
