Why Iron in Pregnancy
Blood volume rises by about half, and the baby takes what it needs first. Iron deficiency is common by the third trimester and causes exhaustion, dizziness, and risks for delivery. Oral iron is slow and upsets the stomach; an IV refills stores in one or two visits.
Who Qualifies
Second or third trimester, low ferritin or hemoglobin on labs, and clearance from your OB. Our medical director reviews the labs and the OB's note before the visit.
The Visit
A nurse comes to your home, runs the iron over about an hour with monitoring, and stays 30 minutes afterward. Iron Infusion IV is $399.
Safety
Modern iron formulations have a low reaction rate. The nurse carries the medications to handle a reaction and the medical director is reachable throughout.
