The Exam

The provider looks in both ears with an otoscope, checks the throat and sinuses, and takes a temperature. For a child, a parent holds them on their lap. It takes five minutes.

Treatment

Antibiotics when the eardrum shows a bacterial infection, pain and fever control, ear drops for outer-ear infections (swimmer's ear), and decongestants or a steroid nasal spray when the problem is the Eustachian tube.

Red Flags

Sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial drooping, or swelling behind the ear: ER.
