Why it matters

First, the honest line: it is not a cure, and it is not a replacement for the treatment your doctor prescribes. It is used alongside it.

What's in it

Recipes vary a little by provider. The core is always the same: magnesium, vitamin B12, B-complex vitamins and vitamin C, carried in a liter of fluid. Zen IV Spa's version runs in Lactated Ringer's and also includes zinc and glutathione.

What each part does

Magnesium takes part in more than 300 chemical reactions in the body. Low magnesium is linked to muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat and headaches, and magnesium helps blood vessels relax. A 1995 study found IV magnesium sulfate cut migraine frequency and intensity in 80% of participants.

Vitamins B6 and B12 support the brain chemicals dopamine and serotonin. B6 helps the body turn tryptophan into serotonin; B12 supports nerves and red blood cells. Studies of folic acid, B6 and B12 together have shown lower migraine severity, especially in people with high homocysteine. A 2004 study found high-dose riboflavin (vitamin B2, part of B-complex) significantly reduced migraine frequency compared with placebo.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that may lower inflammation markers (CRP, IL-6) and affects nitric oxide, which widens blood vessels. A 2012 study found IV vitamin C significantly lowered CRP in patients with inflammation. Oral vitamins C and E have also been shown to reduce migraine frequency, length and severity.

Why IV instead of pills

Some people can't take pills during a migraine, and some have gut problems that limit absorption. IV delivery goes around the digestive system. That's the whole reason it exists.

How it works with Zen IV Spa

A licensed nurse brings the drip to you anywhere in New York and New Jersey, 8 AM to 11 PM, seven days a week. The visit takes about 45 minutes. Before your first drip, a licensed provider reviews your health history on a quick video call and writes an order just for you, under our medical director's protocols. Keep your neurologist in the loop; this works best as part of a plan, not instead of one.
