What vitamin D does
It helps your body absorb calcium for bone, keeps muscles working, and plays a part in immune function and mood. Low vitamin D in adults shows up as tiredness, achy bones and muscles, more colds, and low mood in the dark months.
Who runs low
People who work indoors, cover up outside, have darker skin, are over 65, carry extra weight, or have gut conditions that limit absorption. In our area that is most people by January.
What a shot does
A vitamin D shot puts a larger amount into the muscle, where the body stores it and releases it over weeks. The benefit over a pill: it works even if your gut absorbs poorly, and it does not depend on remembering a daily pill. The honest limit: for most people with a mildly low level, a daily pill works fine and costs less.
Who benefits most from a shot
People with a clearly low level who have not responded to pills, people with absorption problems (celiac, Crohn's, past stomach surgery), and people who simply will not take a daily pill. A licensed provider decides based on your number.
Why the blood test comes first
More vitamin D is not better. It is stored in fat, so too much over months can raise blood calcium and cause real problems. A simple blood test (25-hydroxyvitamin D) tells you where you stand. Most labs call 20 ng/mL or above enough for bone health. NIH recommends 600 IU a day for adults up to 70 and 800 IU after 70 from food and supplements; the safe upper limit is 4,000 IU a day unless a provider says otherwise. A shot is given on a provider's order, matched to your number, never on a guess.
